Established in 1994, currently there are 112 staff members
Péter Horváth was appointed President of HEO in September 2010. The Prime Minister upon proposal of the Minister of Economy appoints the President and the Vice-President for a 6 year term.
HEO regulates and supervises energy activities of electricity and gas companies, heat production of electric power stations and CHP companies over 0.5 MW and protects customer interests.
Fees from licensees regulated by the joint decree of the Minister of Economy and Transport and the Minister of Finance cover the HEO’s operating costs.

- 66% of electricity market is open from July 1 2004, and 65,4% of the natural gas market is open from January 1, 2004 (in legal terms)
- Regulated third party access, cross border trade, stranded costs, market power monitoring, public service obligation
- Regulated prices are prepared by the Hungarian Energy Office and approved or rejected by the Minister of Economy and Transport; new gas price regulation has been effective since January 18, 2006 for 4 years, the four-year electricity price regulation period started at the beginning of 2005
- Harmonization of the energy policy according to the European Union Directives.
